Friday's For The Love Of Chairs? #9

Wondering about the question mark in the title?  Well, it's because today's post is actually about ottomans.  I mean they're kind of like chairs right?  They are used for sitting.  I'm a little obsessed with them right now.  So, just for this Friday, let's talk ottomans.  Specifically cowhide ottomans, mmmmmkay?

I'm over the moon crazy for these and have been for-ev-er!
IKEA STOCKHOLM Footstool, Delikat white, black Width: 23 5/8 " Depth: 20 1/8 " Height: 16 1/8 " Width: 60 cm Depth: 51 cm Height: 41 cm

Oh my gosh, I want them, borderline need them.  Okay, okay, I just want them.  BAD!  I'll take two of them for my family room stat.  They're from Ikea, and they're $279 a pop.  I'm saving my beans.  Why must it take so long to save up beans?!  Oh that's right - we have kids (i.e. money-sucker-uppers).  :)  Someday......someday two of these will arrive, and I'll pet them.  Sorry, too much?  I know some people don't speak cowhide.  I get it, really I do.  I, however, do speak the language and am quite fluent.  I've never been into hide rugs as much as I love hide ottomans and chairs.  There's just something about that look that speaks to me.  What?  I told you I was fluent.

Love this!  It adds texture and warms things up in this living space.  It gives the room a nice layered and collected feel.

I also like this ottoman from Room and Board, but I prefer the shape of the Ikea one best.  Not to mention that these are more expensive.

So, picture me checking the Ikea website every morning wondering if they've gone on sale and praying they haven't been discontinued before I get all my beans saved.  Pretty pathetic huh?!

What do you all think?  Are you a hide lover like myself?  Or is this just not your thing?

Just for fun, because after all, this is a "for the love of chairs" post.  Check out this chair!

                                                                     Source: via Ashley on Pinterest

Shut your mouth!  It's like, "Come to momma!"  This is the kind of chair you build a room around!  It's way out of my budget, but one of you swanky peeps might wanna make it yours (then invite me over so I can curl up with a good book and a glass of wine - I won't spill -I promise.)!

Seriously though, Mom, if you're reading this you should think about buying this chair.  It would look awesome in your home, and I'd fly out to Cali to visit more often.  :)  What?  You know you love it too.  Where do you think this chair obsession came from?!!

Sorry - awkward!  Have a great weekend you all!  My kids want me to take them to see The Smurfs movie.  Good golly, why do they keep remaking things that were just fine the way they were?  Uh - Footloose - really?!  If they try to remake Pretty in Pink I might start a revolution!  You think I'm kidding; I'm so not.  I mean you all saw what they did to Fame right?!  Travesty- enough said. (Who remembers what movie the word "travesty" came from?)  Clearly - I'm crazed - why you keep reading this blog I'll seriously never know.  ;)

More Stenciled Curtains!

I received the sweetest e-mail last week from Amy at Triangle Honeymoon.  She wrote......

Hi Carmel,
My husband and I were inspired by your stenciled drapes and decided to
make our own version for our living room. We wanted to be sure to share
 with you! Thanks so much!

This totally made my day!  I inspired someone?!  I immediately clicked the link and literally gasped out loud!  Her curtain panels came out so so great!

I mean really, how awesome do these look?!  AMAZING!  She used drop cloths from Lowes and the same Olive Leaf Ikat stencil (which are currently on sale until the end of the month) that I used on my curtains.  You can read all about her project here.

Blogging has really been a blessing in my life.  I'm so flattered and honored that she shared this project with me!

Head on over to Triangle Honeymoon and say hello.  You won't believe this but they're actually making more stenciled ikat curtain panels to hang in their adjoining dining room!

Have you stenciled anything lately?

Vacay Wrap-Up and More Guest Posting

One of the things on our Summer list was to go to the beach.  Being a Southern California girl, the beach (no matter what coast) makes me extremely happy.  We've been vacationing at Kiawah Island, SC since we got married almost eleven years ago.  The hubs parents have a house there, and we usually head down once a year.  It's a nice, relaxing family vacation filled with playing at the beach, riding bikes around the island, and eating too much seafood.  Yeah, it's the perfect vacation trifecta!

The drive from Lexington, Kentucky is about 9 hours.  With two kids in tow, it can take a little longer.  :)  So, the most essential part of the packing process includes road trip survival kits.

The math workbooks were a nice thought in theory :)
I keep these plastic bins (dollar store) in the van (yes, I drive a swagger wagon - cuz I'm cool like that) all the time.  When we are headed on a long trip somewhere, I clean them out and add in a few new things.  Everything usually comes from the dollar section at Target or the dollar store.  They're a nice way for the kids to keep their stuff organized, and they know that if it doesn't fit in the bin it's not coming on the trip. This helps keep my van free of stuffed animals and other large items.  These car kits give the kids something to do besides snacking on junk food.  Obviously, we also have an entertainment system so there's always a movie marathon as well.  By the way, if you haven't seen Megamind yet you seriously need to rent or buy it.  It's HI-larious, and the soundtrack rocks!

The kids aren't the only ones that need a little help making it through about 9 hours on the road.  Momma needs to survive too!

I learned to crochet a few years ago.  It keeps me busy so the time flies by.  I did help drive (a little) - thank goodness the hubs was back to driving a week before we left.  His ankle is almost completely back to normal.

All the time spent traveling was so worthwhile.   Watching my little peeps play on the beach was priceless.

I taught the boy how to boogie board this time.  He was pretty impressed with his momma.  I don't know how to surf, but I can boogie with the best of them.  :)  Just sayin'.

All in all we had a great time!  The icing on the cake was meeting up with a blog friend.  There's something magical about the beach, and Kiawah Island never disappoints.

Where do you like to vacation with your family?  Do you like to beach bum it as much as we do?  Anyone have any road trip survival skills they'd like to share?

On another note, I'm guest posting over at Living Savvy today!  Tiffany invited me over to join her spray painters anonymous support group.  :)  Clearly she knows I'm obsessed.

The winner of the Willow House Must Have Mini Markers (a set of 6 of the cuties you see above) is..........

#12 - April from a kitchen table for two!  Congratulations April!  I used to generate the winning number, but I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to get the little random generator box over to my blog.  Don't be jealz of my mad techy skillz.  ;)  Thanks to everyone who entered my very first giveaway here on the blog.  Hopefully there will be many more in the future!  April, send me an e-mail at, and I'll get you all hooked up with your mini-markers!

Hope you all have a great day!  I'm still having a hard time waking up to the fact that I'm no longer at the beach.  :(  Not to mention the kid's school mailed us a school supply list which is an evil sign that my summer is quickly coming to end - boooooo!  I still have to cross some things off my summer list!  Are you ready for fall?  Or are you like me revolting against the end of summer?!  Hmmmmm......I might need to have a summer movie marathon to boost my spirits.  What are your favorite summer movies?

Guess Who x 2

I'm back from beautiful Kiawah Island, SC.  We had such a great time.  I'll post a full vacay wrap-up sometime this week.  For now let's play a little game of guess who x 2, which basically means let's play 2 games okay?!

First, guess who I got to meet while I was on vacay?!

Cassie from Primitive and Proper !!!  Cassie is one of my blogging friends that has now become a real life friend!  She read my post on Friday about how I'd been vacationing with my family in Kiawah and commented that she was visiting Seabrook.  For those that aren't familiar with the area, Kiawah and Seabrook are right next door to each other.  Isn't it crazy how the world works sometimes?!  Cassie and I met for coffee Saturday morning and chatted about anything and everything.  I swear it was like we'd known each other for years.  She is the absolute sweetest!  I hate to embarrass her, but I have to say, she has the most beautiful blue eyes you've ever seen!  Really!  I had to e-mail her after we'd met to let her know I was sorry if I was staring but that her eyes are just so pretty I couldn't help myself.  :)  You think I'm kidding, but this is the truth peeps!  I was so thrilled to meet her in person.  If you have never been to her blog you must pay her a visit.  She is so talented and does amazing things with furniture!

I have to say making new friends has been the most unexpected surprise of this whole blogging adventure!  I'm truly blessed to have sweet Cassie as a real life friend now!

Okay, up for one more round of guess who?  Well, guess who asked me to guest post about my dining room stenciling project on her fabulous blog?!

Yep, Shelli from a la mode !  You've probably already seen her gorgeous home tour on a number of blogs unless of course you've been living under a rock.  She has amazing design skills!  I was beyond flattered when she asked if I'd guest post on her blog.  Head on over to check it out!

I'll be back tomorrow to announce the winner of the Willow House "must have mini markers" giveaway.  If you haven't already entered, there's still time!

Pardon The Interruption

I'm interrupting my usual friday obsession this week to let you in on a little secret.  Guess where I've been all week.

I've been hanging out with my family in Kiawah Island, SC.  We'll be heading back home this weekend, but I really don't wanna leave this beautiful place!

I'm sorry I haven't been around much this past week, but the ocean was calling to me.  ;)   I'll be back next week!  Happy Friday!  Don't forget the giveaway ends Tuesday, so there is still plenty of time to enter!

Guest Room

I'm starting to get crackin' in the guest room.  I made a rash decision when we first moved in and painted it a super-blindingly, bright aqua.  This is why I didn't say a dang word about the bright orange bedroom on Design Star last week.  I believe it's he who is without sin may cast the first stone.  ;)  I've made a number of bad color choices.  No big though; it's just paint people.  Better to have tried and repainted then never to have tried at all - right?!  ;)

I snapped this pic after I had started cutting in with the new color.

After repainting it Waverly's Lambswool, I'm back on track now.  I've decided to go neutral with pops of red so I can easily change the look of the room by switching out the accessories.

The room is sort of small for a king size bed, but we want our guests to be really comfortable when they visit.  We moved our old mattress in here ( I say old but it's only about 7 years old) when we bought ourselves a tempurpedic a few years ago.  Best. Purchase. Ever.  Anyhow, there was nothing wrong with the mattress we had so we moved it into our guest room.

Using all white bedding really helps to make the room look larger and less cramped.  I just love all white on a bed!  This set is from Target.   The red rose pillows are from Pier 1 (last fall).  The suzani pillow was a HomeGoods purchase.  I'm slightly obsessed with it.

Now I just need to figure out what to do for headboard.  Any ideas?

Date Night

I love date night!

Date Night Poster

Not this Date Night, although Tina Fey and Steve Carell - need I say more?!  I'm actually talking about my own date nights with the hubs.  We are date night regulars.  Dating each other is how this whole "let's get married" thing got started, so we figured why stop after the altar.

Date night is always a good night.  It's a chance to get out of my yoga pants.  ;)

It's a hot Southern summer, so yeah I'm wearing shorts out on a date.  Were you expecting a dress or something?!
It's a chance for us to speak to each other without interruption.  I love family time, but spending time alone with my love is really special.  It's nice to talk, laugh and enjoy each other.  To drive in the car without listening to the Squeakquel soundtrack (not that I don't love me some chippettes).  To eat a meal without having to cut up someone else's food.  To enjoy a nice meal and a glass (or 2 or 3) of wine.

Like I said I love date night.

What about you?  Are you a date night regular?

Friday's For The Love Of Chairs #8

Happy Friday!  Man, do I love me some Friday!  It's like the diving board to the weekend pool - awwww yeah!   I especially love Fridays since starting this series.  I get to feed my obsession with chairs, and mamma's always hungry for more!  HA - what has gotten in to me?!  Crazy much?!

At any rate, craziness aside, I've got a really good chair for you today.  Just one because it totally stands alone.  Look at this beauty y'all!!!

I know right?!  Shut your mouth; you're drooling.  Oh wait, that's me.  :)  Is that not the most gorgeous chair that you've ever seen?!  Do you all know Sherry from Design Indulgence?  She's an amazing designer and is darn funny too!  Her blog is one of my favs!

She's been making some changes in her home recently (like the beautiful white hardwood floors!).  She shopped her home and found this beauty of a chair in her basement!  She bought it for like $10 about 8 years ago, painted it white, and had it covered in an old zebra hide.  I just love this chair.  Timeless. Chic.  Stunning.

Go say hi to Sherry if you don't already know her.  She's got crazy mad design skillz!

Have a fabulous Friday!  Anyone have any great weekend plans?

My Couponiversary

I can't believe I missed my couponiversary last month!  Yes, this June I celebrated my first year of couponing.  Check here for my intro to couponing post for the newbies here.  Wahoo!  Oh the dolla dolla bills I've saved makes me wanna do a happy dance.  Picture me doing the snake like Chris Tucker in Rush Hour.  Or maybe don't.  Y'all have seen that movie right?!

Rush Hour Poster

Rent it, laugh your tail off, and thank me later.  But wow, random much?!  Let me get back to the point -my couponiversary celebration!

                                                                               Source: via Christa on Pinterest

I figured the best way to get my coupon partay on was to give you a little tidbit of information that may just change your life.  It certainly changed mine.  Maybe that is a bit of a stretch.  Seriously though, learning how to save money on the things you need to buy means you have more money for the things you want to buy, and yeah, to me that is life changing!  For the diy'er it means more project money!  So are you ready for this?!  Three letters.  C V S!  Yes, CVS, the pharmacy, is a goldmine.  I'm not kidding.  I don't joke about money. ever.

                                                                            Source: via Amy on Pinterest

CVS is a couponer's dream come true!  Check it out y'all.

I learned all that I know about CVSing from the website that beats all other couponing websites that I mentioned here  - Southern Savers.  I'm going to break it down for you because if you're new to the "world of coupons" it may be a bit confusing.  Okay, so let's do this thing!

CVS rocks because CVS gives you ECB otherwise known as Extra Care Bucks.

What are they?  They are money back to use in the store.  They come attached on your receipt when you buy something that qualifies for ECB.  What qualifies for ECB changes with each weekly sale.  The southern saver will help you out by listing it all under the CVS tab on her website.

To become a CVS rock star follow these 3 steps.  Trust me all the cool kids are doing it okay!

1.  Go to the Southern Savers website and print out your CVS shopping list.

2.  Gather the coupons you have for the items on your list.

A little wine can't hurt.  Ha!

3.  Then shop and be amazed at your savings.

Here's an example of why ECB rock.

WYB stands for when you buy.  Okay, so in this example you'll earn $1 ECB when you buy one of the Oral B toothbrushes which are on sale for $3.  Now if you happen to have the PG (Proctor and Gamble) Oral B coupon for $2 off this would then make this toothbrush FREE!  As you'd buy it for $1 and CVS would give you $1 back in ECB!!!!  That's how it works and it's awesome!  Who, I ask you, doesn't like to get something for FREE?!

Now here's an example of using the ECB you've earned, otherwise known as an example of CVS awesomeness:

I had $5 in ECB from a previous shopping trip.  I wanted to take advantage of this great deal - get a $10 gas gift card when you spend $30 on qualified products.  The $30 you had to spend is before coupons.  This was my transaction - for realz:

 Pantene shampoo x 3 bottles at  $4.99
Pantene conditioner x 2 bottles at - $4.99
Bounce dryer sheets - $5.49
Total before coupons = $30.44 (which qualified for the gas card promo)
subtract coupons that I had
Pantene - $3 off
Pantene - $2 off
Pantene - $1 off
Pantene - $1off
Bounce - $.25 off
Total after coupons = $ 23.19
subtract my ECB from the previous week  - $5
Total spent = $18.19

Don't forget that this qualified for the gas card promotion so I also got a $10 gas card!  Booyah!
So with coupons, ECB, and the gas card promo I saved $22.25!  I bought 3 bottles of shampoo, 2 conditioners, and a box of dryer sheets for $8.19 (if you subtract the $10 gas card).  Uh-huh, now that's what I'm talkin' about!

Here are a couple more tips to shopping and couponing at CVS that I've learned from the past year.

- Shop early in the week.  Weekly sales start on Sunday, so try to shop either Sunday or Monday if you can because some of the really great deals (like the ones that make the item FREE) will usually sell out if you wait until Friday.

- There's a coupon kiosk in the store - USE it.  All you have to do is scan your CVS card and it will give you coupons.  Lots of times it will give you coupons for FREE items.  (Like the free Hershey bar with almonds that I didn't need but fully inhaled.)  I see so many people walk right by the kiosk and not scan their card.  It's like leaving money or chocolate in the middle of the street; you just don't do that people!  Ok, maybe you'd leave the chocolate there, but wouldn't you be pissed at the person who left a perfectly good chocolate bar in the middle of the street?!

Lastly, for the record, I've never seen that extreme couponing show.  If it makes people who use coupons look like they're crazy then I probably won't ever watch.  I don't advocate over-shopping or hoarding.  I also do not advocate this mentality.

                                                                        Source: via Missy on Pinterest

So, anyone else down with CVS?  Have you tried the Restore Beautiful Lengths line by Pantene?  It is awesomesauce for your hair!  Once again, thank me later.  :)

Happy Couponing!
