Signature Color

You remember Julia Roberts in Steel Magnolias right?  How could anyone forget that movie.  It's one of my all time favorites.  One thing I will never forget is when Shelby, played by Julia, says that pink is her signature color.

If you've been around Our Fifth House for any amount of time I think it's a pretty safe bet that you already know what my signature color is - RED!  I love it - yesterday (I wore red to my Jr. prom and my first car was red), today (my entry foyer

and family room

are both painted red), and tomorrow (it's an obsession that will never end I'm sure - shoes, hand bags, bracelets - you can never have enough red in your life I say).

So color me surprised when I started flipping through the May issue of House Beautiful.......

and found this little blurb from one of my all time favorite designers - Barclay Butera.

ACK!  I literally screamed!  My hub was not amused.  ;)  That color - Hunting Coat Red by Ralph Lauren - is the very. first. color. I ever painted in my diy -house fix in' up-life!  Back in the olden days, when Home Depot used to carry RL paint, my mom came to visit us (we lived in Virginia at the time - that was our 3rd house) and she helped me paint my dining and living room this color red.  I never before then had ever picked up a paint roller and painted anything myself!

Fast forward to now and when we toured this house before we bought it, the entry foyer and family room were already painted red.  Although the color the previous owners used, Porter Paints Apple, is no longer carried.  This Porter color is pretty much an exact match to the RL color, and when I walked in to the home for the very first time I felt like it was fate - like this home was already draped in my signature color just waiting for me to move in and make her mine.  ;)   I know I sound crazy - just go with it - that's what my hub does.  Anyhow, we did have the paint refreshed by our painter friend (I do paint - just not in vaulted rooms) and he matched this red in a Perspectives paint (which is a local paint shop here in Lexington that the pros swear by).

It really is the very best red - if you don't trust me - take Barclay Butera's word for it - his word is way better than mine.  See for yourself how amazing he is if you don't already know.

I can't even tell you how thrilling it was for me to see Barclay Butera recommending my favorite paint color!  Yes, I'm a nerd and things like this make me scream.

What's your signature color?

  6. I love that you are a red girl. It is important to have a signature color isn't it? Not sure what mine is since I change every hour of the day :). You reminded me that I have a stack of magazines that haven't been touched and one them is House Beautiful.

  7. That is a great shade of red! I've never considered painting any room in my house red. I love the foyer so much. I'm pinning it now.

  8. I, too, am a red girl and it is the very reason I started following your blog. It's so hard to find red inspirations in all the whitewashed magazines and blog posts. Too many people are afraid of color and I love how you've incorporated it throughout your home. Your recent color challenge posts have been great. Our dining room is painted red and we have red accents through our entire house. I just can't get enough!

  9. I love red.... all my accent colors about 10 years ago were red then I went to the brown and blue phase and now I am loving grey and coral. But I will forever be a pink girl with all the boys in my house.

  10. I love red, too, but I don't have the (excuse mg French) ballz to paint my house that color! We don't get a lot of natural light in the summer, so red would make my house feel like a dungeon! I've been addicted to turquoise for the past year, and every single room is getting shades of it. Ha! These poor husbands that let their wives take over the decorating.... Lol

To see pics of the turquoise I've used, see my blog and click on "master bedroom." it's a Sherwin Williams Rainwashed and it's divine!!

  11. So the question is....will your ceiling be gold??? Seem's like you have all the other parts. I love that your not painting everything greige like everyone else. That's what makes me like your blog..because your not afraid of color. BTW, red is also my favorite color!!

    1. Thanks Casey! No gold ceilings for me - at least not right now. ;) I think metallic paint on a ceiling would be hard for me to pull off.

  12. I'm not a red girl, more of turquoise and salmon.....however, I have been dreaming of painting my front door Hunting Coat Red by RL for years now. Best red ever. Maybe it's time to do it. I think you should incorporate some red into your chevron header, making it more of a personal statement.

  13. Love your red. I painted my dining room red and I hate it, but not because of the red but because I dont like my dining room. I thought the red would fix it. It didn't. I love that section of HB where they recommend colors. I'm always fascinated by it.

  16. My signature color is navy. People thought I was insane when I decided to paint the dining room in our tiny house navy. It turned out perfect and I love it!

  17. That's awesome about the Hunting Coat Red! I, too, used that color a "few" years back in my previous home. I loved it in our family room - it was lovely! I knew there was a reason I was attracted to your red walls ;) Then I went through one of those "i need everything neutral and soothing" moments upon moving to our current home. It fits me for now, but I'll always love red no matter what!
