Pretty New Knobs & Furniture Question

My favorite aisle at the Hob Lob is the hardware aisle.  You know the one that has all the pretty knobs and hooks and things.  I LOVE that aisle!

The best thing about the Hob Lob is that you never have to pay full price for anything.  They run those 50% off sales all. the. time.  When I see that red sign in the hardware aisle, you better watch out.  I will run you over.  Doesn't matter if I need new knobs, if they're 50% off!

So, I got some new knobs - you had to know where this was headed.

I mean come on - they practically had my name on them.  Red - check.  Blue - check. White - check.  Hint of gold - check.  $2/ each - check - -and you get it.

It's not a major change, but when happiness only costs $6 it's a good day.  I like details.  I'm a simple girl.

And now for the not so happy part, the furniture question.  Something icky is happening to this wine bar that I painted over a year ago.  The reddish cherry stain that is under the paint is starting to come through in spots.

I used a primer too?  I don't understand why this would happen especially after almost a year?  Is it because it gets a lot of sun here in this location since I moved it from across the room?  I'm hoping one of you furniture painting gurus can help me.  I don't bust out the furniture projects as fast as a lot of you do, so this has me kind of stumped.  I'm also unsure how to fix this.  I don't want this to happen again so I'd love your advice before I repaint.

Has this ever happened to you?  Are you as obsessed with the hardware aisle at the Hob Lob as I am?

  1. those knobs are AWESOME! and yes, so you!
what kind of primer did you use? maybe it wasn't strong enough? is moisture getting in there at all? (doubt it, but want to be thorough!)

  3. I totally understand the need to get knobs just because they're on sale!
I snagged some "h" knobs for 90% off months ago and still haven't used them...

These new knobs definitely add some personality to the piece!

  7. I have no idea about the paint problem and why it would bleed through a YEAR later. Weird! I love your new knobs and am obsessed with the Hob Lob knobs too. It's amazing how changing the hardward can totally change the feel of a piece of furniture. I just saw that knobs are ALWAYS 50% off now at HL. Hooray!

  10. I hit the Hobby Lobby for the first time ever a few months back ... and I have to agree with you about the hardware! I was in love. I think I spent an hour alone in that aisle ... picking and changing my mind ... and changing it back again and again!

And while "paint" is in my blog name I am of no help about that piece of furniture ... so sorry ...

    :)

  11. I am by no means a wood expert, but it could be the wood itself causing the issue. Some wood, such as pine, is very "absorbent" (also read "difficult to paint"). My mom painted some wood (pine I think) letters white for my sister's room a few years ago and it took ten coats of paint to achieve the proper look. The wood just kept sucking up the paint and it took her forever to get them finished. The same thing happened with an unfinished pine armoire that she painted white five years ago. It took several coats to finish the piece and just recently we noticed the knots in the pine starting the show through the white paint. That might be the cause of your issue. Unfortunately, I figure the best solution is just to repaint it. However, someone who works with wood all the time might have much better advice. Hope this helps!

Btw, I love the knobs! :)

  12. Those knobs WERE made for you - you simply could NOT leave them behind! No idea on the bleed-through issue but it reminds me of knots in pine, how they come through after a while. Why this happens I do not know but I recommend an oil based primer to prevent it from happening again (I like Kilz).

  13. Love the cute new knobs!! They look perfect on that piece! Weird that it is doing that after all this time...no idea why!?

I loved meeting you at Haven. What? You don't remember me? I was the dorky blonde that came up to you at the mixer to awkwardly tell you how much I loved your blog. And, it's true! :-) My apologies for the dork factor. I can't control it! :-/

    Have a great week!

  14. Obsessed isn't even the word! I just updated my daughter's desk in her room with new knobs. It is the easiest and cheapest way to make a big diff.

  15. The knobs look great on your stand. I read somewhere that to prevent the stain from bleeding through, you need to seal it. I've been trying to find the blog where I read this. I think she said to use shellac & then you'd be able to paint over that.

  16. Blah only thing I could come up with is a post Diane over at In My Own Style recommends using Kilz Easy Start. But I'll keep looking for that other post.

  17. Love the knobs! They are gorgeous! Hobby Lobby is so big I never even realized they had a hardware aisle! I definitely need to check it out for, well every single piece of hardware in my house! Bless the people that lived here before us... ;)

  18. Great knobs! Spent date night with hubs, at HL! Couldn't believe he agreed to go! Not sure about the red showing through, but after a couple glasses of wine, no one will care! Hope you get a better solution from someone else!

  19. Btw, there's an extremely annoying floating ad that's popping up randomly across the screen! Not sure if it's anything you can control. Just saying...

  20. I had the same thing happen to old record cabinet that I painted white. The cherry stain came through about a year later, but in my case, it was much less attractive than your streaking. I used a KILZ primer, too. Maybe we should have used oil based primer and paint! I don't often say this to a gal, but great knobs!

  21. I'm a knob a-holic too!! Those are some great knobs......About your buffet, stripping it completely may work, sometimes primer doesn't even cover some finishes....Enjoy Napa!!!

Be nice or I'll tell your mom! xoxo -C
