When we moved in (almost 3 years ago) my son asked for a Star Wars bedroom (and I practically did a cartwheel). As much as I love me some Star Wars I didn't want to go overboard with a "theme". I wanted the room to reflect his love (and mine) for Star Wars without getting too charactery (yes, that's a word). It took me a while to put it all together, but I think he's pretty happy with the end result.
I think there are more diy projects in this room than any other room in the house which is probably why it took almost 3 years to get it to where it is today. By far the biggest Star Wars bang for the buck is the ceiling.
It was an inexpensive way to bring home that Star Wars feeling he was after, and when (if) he graduates from Jedi training I can pretty easily remove the decals and roll on some primer.
Those stars glow in the dark, and I kind of wish they were on my bedroom ceiling.
The biggest labor of love was "building" a storage bed and turning a pegboard into a headboard.
I need to take a minute here to address the elephant in the room or rather the flag in distress. You see I learned after this project was done that I had apparently painted the flag upside down? Ummm....oops. I used a catalog as my guide for the image, so I guess it pictured it wrong as well. I never would have thought to check that the catalog pictured it correctly. You live and learn I guess. The best part is when I told my son about my mistake and that an upside down flag is a signal of distress his words were priceless! "I think that makes it cooler - I mean you force me to go to bed at 8, so it kinda makes sense." You gotta love an honest 8 yr. old boy!
So, here it is - upside down - in distress - and apparently cooler like this to my 8 yr. old. Not one of our American friends has caught this mistake and even my English friends didn't notice........right away. ;)
Taking advantage of the awkward ceiling and shape of the room I created a study area.
As usual the little details are some of my favorites. I also really love the artwork - some handmade - some found on Etsy.

I'm so thankful it's finally done...............for now. ;)
Truly wonderful the mind of a child is........truer words have never been spoken.
Here's a list of all the diy projects in this room.
I also changed the hardware on the furniture (Pottery Barn Kids) with fun knobs from the Hob Lob, and turned some paper mache letters into faux metal - but never blogged about those little projects.
Thanks for coming on the journey with me! May the force be with you - c'mon, you knew that was coming.

I love this room Carmel!! I think you did a great job of giving your son the Star Wars themed room he was wanting without going too "themey."
ReplyDeleteAnd I would have never know that the flag was upside down on the headboard! To me, it looks like every other union jack flag I've seen! If yours is upside down, then so are hundreds more all over blogland!
I want to do homework in his room! And I always hated homework. Kid has the coolest room!
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure if you are joking or if the flag really IS upside down. I don't see a difference.
ReplyDeleteGreat room. my jedi would have loved this when he was little. Love the headboard, very clever to use pegboard!
ReplyDeleteLooks amazing!! I think it's awesome you are giving your son such a cool one of a kind room. When I was a kid I would have LOVED a cool room like this! (except girl themed of course:) Great job!
ReplyDeleteit is AMAZING!!!!!!! i pinned it! one of these days sawyer and collin need to get together and play in each other's rooms- they would have too much fun!
ReplyDeleteSo many great details went into this room - I love that platform bed, and the pegboard headboard! You are so creative and I bet your boy is lovin' his digs!!
ReplyDeleteAs a fellow Star Wars enthusiast, I'm freakin' in love with that artwork you found! How cool is the Star wars starry night??? Not to mention that I'm pretty sure most young boys would give an arm to have that cool of a room. (c;
ReplyDeleteIts obvious you aren't decorator, but I think you did great job with the limited budget you had.
ReplyDeleteKeep trying and it will soon look a lot better.
Great effort though.
That is a COOL room!! my 5 y/o son loves it!! While I can appreciate Star Wars, I'm not as nuts about it as my husband is( I think he over-played the movies as we were dating). But this would work. Not too themey, yet, a definite Jedi vibe. Where did you fin the Starry Star wArs night print? Love it!
ReplyDeleteFantastic job, Carmel! I'm sure there are throngs of boys who would love to hire you to do their room...mine included! :) Finished...such a nice (rare) feeling!
ReplyDeleteCarmel, it looks so good. I am still loving that headboard. I bet he loves his room, too and that is what counts.
ReplyDeleteLoving It! I hope it doesn't take me 3 years... but it sure paid off!
ReplyDeleteEverything about this room is so fun and special. Your son is lucky to have you as his mom!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely LOVE this room! It is seriously awesome! You cant beat Star Wars, especially when it looks this classy!
ReplyDeleteCute bedding too!!! It is awesome! Love the ceiling. Great job. Where is the bedding from?
ReplyDeleteThe striped duvet is from Target, the red plaid throw - Old Navy, the stars shams Marshalls
DeleteIt looks great. Really. It looks fantastic. You are very resourceful!!!
DeleteWow! This looks awesome! Where did you get those Polaroid picture frames from?
ReplyDeleteI bought them at a little local boutique store but I've seen similar frames at Target.
DeleteI love it! And the flag? I don't get it, it looks the same on the top and the bottom to me. How is it upside down. Maybe I am being a total airhead?
ReplyDeleteCarmel...AWESOME job! I love how the room turned out. Love the ceiling, adore the headboard and just all the little details! I know it took awhile but it was worth it. It looks stellar! :-) <3 Heidi Rew from PartiesforPennies.com
ReplyDeleteWhat a lucky lucky boy. It's a fantastic room, Carmel. All of the details have me swooning as well. So impressed with how it all came together. So happy we got to see all of it like this. And the use of that space for a desk is so smart. You rock!!!
ReplyDeleteNow I'm curious, how exactly is the flag upside down? I googled other UJ images...looks right to me.
ReplyDeleteOn a different note, you go girl, his room looks awesome. Perfect cuz it's not too "themey", and it can really grow with him.
I love this room soooo much! My son also wants a Star Wars room. This has given me lots of ideas for his room - thanks! (I didn't notice the flag either.)
ReplyDeleteThis room is fantastic! Lucky boy! I would love some details on the rustic-looking book crate on wheels...I need to corral my magazine stack in my living room, and this is much cooler than anything else I've seen. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI found the crate at TJ Maxx and I added the castors. Such an easy project!
DeleteThank you all so much for your sweet comments!
ReplyDeleteI love your blog .All day I visite your blog. You have a follower from Chile

The force was definitely with you when you did this room - that ceiling is amazing! You're one cool mom!
ReplyDeleteKelly
I am in love with this room!
ReplyDeleteMy youngest son, 7, has been such a huge help with our current kitchen and bath renovations that I have promised him a room makeover when we are all finished. He saw this room and wants to move in (!) so I am going to be copying some of your ideas, if you don't mind.
I absolutely love the dark blue ceiling with the stars! Can you tell me what paint brand and color you used and how you got those little swirly-things on there?
Thanks a bunch, and have a very happy New Year!
Stacy
PS: I'm doing the pegboard headboard as well, but want to paint it Star Wars related -- but fairly easy cause I am not artistic in the least. Any ideas? I thought of the logo, but I'd like something "cooler". :)
ReplyDeleteMaybe a storm trooper head?
DeleteHi there! I LOVE LOVE LOVE your creativity!! I am getting ready to create a Star Wars room for my son.... and like Stacy, I would LOVE if you could give some advice or directions on how you created the swirly blue ceiling! ? I Love it ! Please help!!
ReplyDeleteCheck this post here for the how to on the ceiling - http://www.ourfifthhouse.com/2012/01/letting-my-geek-flag-fly.html
DeleteThanks!! I sooooo copied your wall and ceiling colors and I love it!! I don't think mine quite compares to yours... but hey, my 5 year old will love it! Soooo... My next question is... How did you do the quotes on the wall? Like the one above the window. Is that a sign? Or painted on somehow? How did you do the letters? I must tap into your creative juices! Lol... hope you don't mind. Thanks again for the amazing inspiration!
ReplyDeleteI bought these vinyl quotes on Etsy from this shop here - http://www.etsy.com/shop/decalhappy
DeleteDoesn't look like there are Star Wars quotes in the shop right now but maybe you could convo her with a special request. Or do a search for Star Wars vinyl quotes and tons of other shops will pop up. Hope that helps!
Thanks again! I will see what I can find. Did you just order the black letters from etsy and then paint the blue and the red on the wall? Or is the whole thing a decal? Hope I'm not driving you crazy with all of these questions!! It's your fault for being Star Wars brilliant. : )
DeleteI painted the light blue first - then applied the vinyl letters and taped off for the red border. But you might be able to find something pre made. You're not driving me crazy at all. ;) I'm happy to help!
