Organize It: Under the Sink

Last week after dinner one night I kind of had a minor freak out.  I was getting ready to start the dishwasher and opened the cabinet door under the sink.......

ummmmm........do you even see any Finish dishwasher tabs?

It was a cleaning product jungle in there!

I had to do something about it right then and there.  I literally just couldn't take it anymore!  So I pulled everything out, sorted it in piles, cleaned the inside of the cabinet, and then grabbed a few helpful organization pieces from around the house before putting what I was keeping back in there.

My goal was to keep everything front and center.  I'm all about easy access.  The wire shelf I bought at Big Lots to use in the kids bathroom was redirected to the kitchen instead.  The lazy susan I picked up for the spice cabinet weeks ago, but since it didn't fit in there it's being put to work keeping all of my cleaning sprays within reach.  The command hook is perfect for hanging my swiffer duster handle, and the wall mount paper towel holder that I purchased at BB&B the next morning was the perfect solution for keeping them within reach but not in the way.  It really does help to take advantage of the vertical storage space you have.

And if you're wondering how in the world I wrangled that mess of paper bags, I cut one in half and opened it, then folded all of the others neatly to fit inside.  Oh my word, I have no idea why I didn't think to do this sooner.  It works perfectly and hardly takes up any space at all!

And so the moral of this story is  - sometimes it pays to have a random week night freak out.  My kids were probably soooo glad to be headed off to bed when this started happening.  But honestly, all I was really trying to do was start the dang dishwasher!  At least now I can see that blue box of tabs in plain view!

Do you ever have unplanned fits of organization?  I can't be the only one that decides to clean out a cabinet at 8:30 pm.  Right?!

Have a great weekend!

  6. Oooh, s pretty organized space - love it, no matter where it is! Awhile back (ok 6 months) I posted using a lazy susan on a shelf in your refrigerator and I still haven't done it, you just kicked me into action! :)

  8. Oh yes, I commonly have freak-out organization fits. My husband and the kids usually run and hide (excellent) and then I can actually get something DONE!

I love the paper towel holder idea!

  10. This makes me feel normal. I do the freak out all the time and rip things out and start organizing. That is why I rarely have a before photo. I just grab and go! Looks so much better. I just did this because our liquid soap {the giant Costco size} had a hole and when I opened the cabinent there was an inch of goo all over the place. Good times!

  11. It looks great! I have random unplanned organizing flip-outs when I open a cabinet/closet/drawer and tons of crap explodes everywhere. That gets me going!

I love the lazy Susan too - although I have three friends named Susan and they hate that there is a product called a "Lazy Susan," so I refer to it as a "Lazy Janice" instead, (after a mean former boss) and my kids just call it a lazy spinner. :)

  12. All of my organizing pretty much happens as a result of "random week night freak out". LOL! Last week the playroom closet was quaking from fear when it saw me coming. ;-) Your under the sink storage looks awesome Carmel!

  14. I am too afraid to go too far under my sink. It's located in the corner and the bottom is actually the baseboard. I'm terrified bugs are going to attack me. So right now I have a wide/short bucket that holds counter top spray, barkeep powder, and extra sponges. One day, when we pretty up our kitchen I am totally in to doing some magic like you did! Yay!

  15. I have to laugh because I just had the same freak-out about our pantry, so it was on a much larger scale. Now that I've seen your organization I have a plan for the lazy susan that I had left over from my pantry purge!

  18. My will to organize always surfaces at the oddest times! But the best organization gets done when I'm motivated so you just have to run with it, right? Love the lazy susan idea!

  19. I had a similar experience today - twice! One of bedrooms has been turned into our junk room but my daughter's Barbies were in there so we went into play. I then started to clean, organize, and throw things away - which was great because we're going to tackle the room for a remodel within 6 months (hopefully!). The second time today was when my dog ate my daughter's sandwich and she wanted another one but then the bread fell behind my oven. Well that was just gross (luckily it was in a package but what was there was gross) so I got the vacuum and sucked up all the dust and grossness. It's the little things some times that helps make me feel good.

  20. I so need to follow your lead and organize under my sink - I'm scared to see what's at the back of my piles of crap under there! Love the idea of the lazy susan - looking for one today!

  22. I love your post--I wonder if I'd be brave enough to show my messes online for all to see, especially since mine always seem to be worse than those shown! I think the end result is great. Great ideas.

I wonder if you can steal a little vertical space by putting the lazy susan up on a smaller wire shelf organizer (if there is enough depth for the cleaners to move without hitting the drain pipes--can't tell from my computer screen). I have some that are square and about the size of a plate to sit on--see them at thrift stores all the time. Maybe you don't have anything else that needs a home, but it always seems to me that after a space is organized, I find or think of something else I wish could fit in there also and then I'm frustrated how to make it work. Rarely do I end up with extra space! lol Maybe something else could fit under the smaller wire shelf and free up space in another problem cupboard or space? Thanks for sharing! Jen
