You remember back in August of 2011 when I talked about the hallway? The one that is open to the family/living room. (I never know what to call it.) Yes, you read that right - back in 2011. I talked about how I was thinking of painting stripes or possibly stenciling the walls. Then I finally made up my mind - stripes - and still no real progress. I revealed the ugly truth about the hallway situation back in September (of this year) and made it my mission to finally deal with this unfinished project.
And today my friends..........
I'm happy to say it's finally done!
I'm just going to say it - the truth - this was the hardest, most frustrating diy project that I've ever done. That being said, I'd do it again in a heartbeat - although I have no plans to paint stripes anywhere anytime soon. ;)
I thought a tone on tone pin stripe would be a nice contrast to the bold color and patterns in the room.
While this was a major pain in the neck, it was a great opportunity for me to show my kids how important math really is. The wall from the bottom of the crown moulding to the top of the baseboard is 8 ft which is 96 inches. The pin stripes are 1 inch, and I wanted an 8 inch wide stripe between each. I have 10 pin stripes, so the bottom wide stripe is 6 inches instead of 8. I wanted to work with even numbers, so I didn't worry about the fact that the last wide stripe would be a little short. Scratching your head? I was too. My special tip for figuring this kind of stuff out is to draw a picture. It sounds elementary, but it really helps to see it all on paper first.
I hung a sunburst mirror to break up the lines. I scored it at HomeGoods. It was a light grey color, so I used black rub 'n buff to darken it up a little.
One unfinished project down........
one million left to do! Ha!
My kiddies are out of school for election day, so I'm off to vote with an 8 and 6 year old in tow - joy! I'll be back tomorrow with a super quick and super easy project - because you know those are the ones I love the most!

seriously amazing!!!!!!! it looks like a planked wall from afar and so rustic and warm and i want to come snuggle by your horse and fire.
ReplyDeleteStripes are a complete booger, but totally worth it. It looks so great! I absolutely LOVE how it works with your other spaces. I'm going to have to drag my kiddo with me to the polls today too - should be interesting!
ReplyDeleteCarmel, I love this. It actually looks like a planked wall. So worth the work.
ReplyDeleteThat turned out really cool! I thought the same thing as Cassie--it looks like a planked wall from a distance. Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteIt turned out so great! You should be proud that you stuck with your vision and finally got it done! :)
ReplyDeleteStripes take so much work on the front end but when you cross your fingers and pull that tape off...glorious! Nice work! Love the colors you chose.
ReplyDeleteI am totally loving the stripes - it really helps break up that space when you look from the family room back.
ReplyDeleteWhat color rub n buff did you use on the mirror? I LOVE it!
I used black - bought it at Hobby Lobby. It's a flat black so over the grey mirror it looks more like a charcoal color.
DeleteLooks fab! Who would guess that stripes could be so tricky! I painted some in my oldest son's nursery, and it is time and labor intensive! I love the contrast and interest against the red wall! I'm with you on the long list of unfinished projects - it just. keeps. growing.
ReplyDeleteThose look great, girl. I love the contrast and the mirror on them. Happy election day!!!
ReplyDeleteHa, that's funny. I've had striped walls for my upstairs hall on my to do list for over a year now too, except I'm not sure mine will ever happen. Your walls look fantastic! I love that it's a different spin on the typical striped wall with the little pinstripes!
ReplyDeleteAll the procrastinating, math and hard work paid off! I love it! I had to paint the stripes in my closet twice. Darn those stripes. Yours look fantastic.
ReplyDeleteSo impressive!! It looks great.
ReplyDeleteI love stripes. I love plaids. There's a similar project in my near future. Think the Southern Living designer house and Rhoda's new bedroom at Southern Hospitality.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely LOVE the pinstriped walls - so much softer on the eye than thick horizontal stripes.
ReplyDeleteSO worth the headache of the math and perfectly aligned taping! I'd be sitting across the room admiring them...a lot! :)
ReplyDeleteThat turned out ah-mazing!! WOW! It does look like a planked wall, which adds so much charm. Love it!! Your photos look gorgeous too. Seriously, these should be in a magazine spread.
ReplyDeleteLove those stripes. And I love your sofa. Where did you get it?
ReplyDeleteIt's from Restoration Hardware - bought it on sale about 5 years ago.
DeleteLove it! You can never go wrong with stripes! And I need some of that dark rub and buff...want to darken my sofa legs.
ReplyDeleteWell, I'd certainly say it was worth the wait. Love the look!
ReplyDeleteLOVE, I'm wanting to do stripes in my new house....now I'm nervous it will kill me too, haha! I was planning to do wide stripes but now you're making me think little, thin ones instead.......
ReplyDeleteCarmel- I love it! It almost looks like paneling, instead of stripes--which makes me like it even more. :-) Such a beautiful space. xo
ReplyDeleteAbby
Looks great! And that mirror is perfect for that space!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE this! The stripes are so subtle, but still make a statement! It looks fabulous Carmel!
ReplyDeleteI know there is no blue but it looks so nautical to me - in a fabulous way! Love it.
ReplyDeleteThose stripes might have been a pain in the neck... but the are absolutely fabulous! At first I thought that I was looking a a photo from a magazine... really! What a gorgeous space!!! I'm a new follower!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Yvonne!
DeleteLooks amazing!
ReplyDeleteLove those stripes! Could you share which colors you chose for them? They are so warm!
ReplyDeleteThe wide stripe is Waverly Cafe Cream ( I used this color in my dining room as well) and the smaller stripe is Martha Stewarts Sandstone ( this is the color of the master bedroom ceiling).
DeleteLooks great! I'm really impressed by your use of the bold red on your living room walls. That's not something you see often. I don't think many could pull it off the way you do. Love it!
ReplyDeleteI love how you have a fat stripe and a thin one! Very clever and it looks like a planked wall! Awesome.
ReplyDeleteAngela
YAY THE STRIPED WALL!!!!! This is SO GREAT CARMEL!! I Loooooooove it!!! I think the pin stripe effect is so great and different. Which color is the base color and topcoat? Meaning did you paint the fat strips or the thin ones? It's hard to tell from the pictures. Looks great. So crisp too! I had a hard time getting really crisp lines. Looks great! Hooray for the striped wall!!!!
ReplyDeleteCasey
