You remember back in August of 2011 when I talked about the hallway? The one that is open to the family/living room. (I never know what to call it.) Yes, you read that right - back in 2011. I talked about how I was thinking of painting stripes or possibly stenciling the walls. Then I finally made up my mind - stripes - and still no real progress. I revealed the ugly truth about the hallway situation back in September (of this year) and made it my mission to finally deal with this unfinished project.
And today my friends..........
I'm happy to say it's finally done!
I'm just going to say it - the truth - this was the hardest, most frustrating diy project that I've ever done. That being said, I'd do it again in a heartbeat - although I have no plans to paint stripes anywhere anytime soon. ;)
I thought a tone on tone pin stripe would be a nice contrast to the bold color and patterns in the room.
While this was a major pain in the neck, it was a great opportunity for me to show my kids how important math really is. The wall from the bottom of the crown moulding to the top of the baseboard is 8 ft which is 96 inches. The pin stripes are 1 inch, and I wanted an 8 inch wide stripe between each. I have 10 pin stripes, so the bottom wide stripe is 6 inches instead of 8. I wanted to work with even numbers, so I didn't worry about the fact that the last wide stripe would be a little short. Scratching your head? I was too. My special tip for figuring this kind of stuff out is to draw a picture. It sounds elementary, but it really helps to see it all on paper first.
I hung a sunburst mirror to break up the lines. I scored it at HomeGoods. It was a light grey color, so I used black rub 'n buff to darken it up a little.

one million left to do! Ha!
My kiddies are out of school for election day, so I'm off to vote with an 8 and 6 year old in tow - joy! I'll be back tomorrow with a super quick and super easy project - because you know those are the ones I love the most!

I used black - bought it at Hobby Lobby. It's a flat black so over the grey mirror it looks more like a charcoal color.
DeleteLooks fab! Who would guess that stripes could be so tricky! I painted some in my oldest son's nursery, and it is time and labor intensive! I love the contrast and interest against the red wall! I'm with you on the long list of unfinished projects - it just. keeps. growing.

ReplyDeleteHa, that's funny. I've had striped walls for my upstairs hall on my to do list for over a year now too, except I'm not sure mine will ever happen. Your walls look fantastic! I love that it's a different spin on the typical striped wall with the little pinstripes!

ReplyDeleteThe wide stripe is Waverly Cafe Cream ( I used this color in my dining room as well) and the smaller stripe is Martha Stewarts Sandstone ( this is the color of the master bedroom ceiling).

YAY THE STRIPED WALL!!!!! This is SO GREAT CARMEL!! I Loooooooove it!!! I think the pin stripe effect is so great and different. Which color is the base color and topcoat? Meaning did you paint the fat strips or the thin ones? It's hard to tell from the pictures. Looks great. So crisp too! I had a hard time getting really crisp lines. Looks great! Hooray for the striped wall!!!!
