Organize It: The Linen and Kids Coat Closet & A Linky Party

I may have misled you into thinking that my linen closet got organized when I shared my tip on rolling instead of folding sheets a few months back.

Ummmmm, yeah, I only rolled the guest bedroom sheets.  I put them in a buffet that I'm using as a dresser in the guest bedroom, so that did free up a little bit of space in my linen closet.  Though even after freeing up some space this closet was still in need of some organization.

It wasn't too terrible, but it wasn't quite living up to its storage potential either.  So, I finally decided to whip it into shape.  I pulled the bulky blankets/comforters out and put them into space bags.  Have you all ever used those before?  Oh my gosh, they totally shrunk down to nothing and now fit quite nicely under the guest bed.  (I bought the space bags at Big Lots of all places?)  As you can see this closet isn't very big.  So freeing up space by removing the bulky blankets and storing guest sheets and towels in the guest room dresser was a huge step in the right direction.

I also decided a while ago that keeping lots of extra sheets was counterproductive.  I almost never used all the extra sets and they took up so much storage space.  I have a "2 sets per bed" rule now which keeps this small linen closet from being overrun.  One set is on the bed; the other is stored in the closet.  Very often we think we need more storage space, when what we really need is less stuff to store.  Reevaluating what I really need to keep is one of the most important steps in organizing for me.

After cleaning, sorting, purging, labeling and beautifying, this closet is now looking much more tidy.

I covered the fabric handles on the bins with some grosgrain ribbon attached with a thumb tack on each end.  For labels I sprayed some wooden cut-outs from the craft store with chalkboard paint and hot glued them to the fronts.   The black and white striped labels are gift tags I bought at Target a while ago.  I used my label maker and attached them with clothespins.

I pulled the bottom shelf out to make space to hang the kids coats in here.  Now it's a multi-use closet storing linens and coats.

You may remember, even though it's been a while since I've posted anything about it, that I'm planning to turn the basement coat closet into a mini-mudroom of sorts.  So, I needed to find a place to store the kids coats, and this little closet worked out perfectly.  Instead of using a closet rod, I decided to use a shower curtain tension rod.  I secured the rod by nailing a piece of scrap wood under the rod at each end where it hits the wall.  This way if I want to move the rod later on down the road it will be super easy to do without having to patch any major screw holes in the wall.

I also decided to use a shower rod at the top of the closet to hang pillow covers.  Hanging them keeps them visible and wrinkle free.

I put an over the door shoe organizer to work for the pillowcases.

This little closet is now being used to the fullest extent!

  10. What a terrific closet. My two favorite ideas are the separation of the queen, twin, king sheets. So clever. I need to do that.

My other favorite. At the top of the list is that ribbon weaving on the front of the shelf. Makes it look a thousand times better.

    Thanks for hosting!

  15. This is all totally brilliant but what I am dying over is the use of the ribbon through the wire shelves. Brilliant. I so need to do this. I picked up those same black/white tags from Target and have yet to use them!
