Shopping At Second Hand Stores - Thrift It Features

I grew up shopping at Goodwill, Salvation Army and many other second hand stores.  My mom would  drag me along on most of her thrift shopping excursions, and I remember having a bad attitude about it most of the time.  I didn't get it back then.  Old furniture did nothing for me, and I couldn't understand why my mom would get so excited about finding a pewter pitcher covered in 9 pounds of dust.

My how times have changed!  I LOVE shopping at second hand stores now!  Apart from the treasures that can be found, often times at a great bargain, it truly inspires creativity.  Breathing life back into an old piece of furniture or finding a way to repurpose something that time has forgotten, is good for the soul.

I also find that those second hand pieces are the ones that really bring a room together -giving it that lived in collected feeling - that you really just can't buy new at a retail store.

These features from the Thrift It party definitely prove my point.
made over sideboard from Primitive and Proper
brass shelf supports and brackets
revamped brass shelf from Cuckoo 4 Design
prettied up old mirror from House by Hoff
blog 004
old frames turned pretty labels from Reinvented

Thanks to everyone for linking up to this party!  I'm looking forward to seeing what you all bring to the table for the Make It Challenge!  The challenge is to make something that you pinned on Pinterest.  Anything goes - recipes -organization - diy projects - whatever pinspires you.  You had to know that was coming.

I'm sharing my project a little early.  I'll be back tomorrow with all the deets!

I now notice that it is really visible that I turned the top glass shelf upside down and never changed it for the photos. Oops! ;)

  5. I was the same way when I was younger! My mom & grandma were constantly taking me & my sister into thrift stores, antique stores .....it totally got on my nerves! I just wanted to shop for clothes back then! LOL!

Now, I'm the one dragging my mom in those same stores! Times definitely change!

  6. That is so how i felt as a kid when my mom would drag me to thrift stores! I didn't get it then, but i do now! Love that brass bookcase. I recently purchased one at a thrift store myself. I've yet to find a piece of furniture like the first picture to refinish to my liking.

  10. As a child I used to tease my dad about buying those old art deco radios ("Dad, why doesn't this thing play FM") and displaying them all over the house. Now I finally get it and can now admire them:)

  11. Love the tour of your house, especially that welcome board. ;) We just moved in to our second house after living in the last one for over 23 years, and it's only transitional for about a year while we search for our dream house. Your blog title definitely caught my attention. ;)
