One of my favorite games to play in my home is – musical furniture. Musical lamps is a second favorite. 😉 I mean what’s better than a no-cost room refresh?!
In this case I finally took care of a little something that has been bugging me in the guest bedroom. I’m a big believer that in every space there should be maybe one or two stars of the show, and then a bunch of really great supporting players. You know, like it’s good to have one, maybe two, things that really draw the eye’s attention, and then a mix of other elements that make for great background noise. Does this make any kind of sense? I think when you use a lot of color and pattern in your spaces this kind of thinking helps to keep things from looking too visually chaotic. It’s also a great way to decide how to spend your budget when you’re designing a space. Anyhow, my favorite thing in our guest bedroom is the red upholstered bed!
All Hail The Red Queen
And I think she deserves to have all eyes on her as soon as you walk into the room.
But this glossy red shelf was kind of stealing her thunder. And truth be told, she’s just as awesome and sassy. She deserves her very own spotlight.
Enter Stage Left – An Old, Tired Chest of Drawers
So……a game of musical furniture began. I wanted to make sure to have something in this spot that could hold all the things that the red bookshelf was holding, so a tall dresser fit the spot rather perfectly.
But she was just a tad too dark. Size and style I really liked. I love a good mix, so I was digging her old school curves and hardware mashed up against the modern leather chairs. But she was a little drab and in need of some love.
I had been wanting to paint this piece for years, so this was the perfect opportunity! I don’t paint old pieces lightly. This piece has been on my hit list for a long time.
And the Oscar for Best Dresser in A Supporting Role Goes To
I busted out a little Amy Howard At Home One Step Paint in Luxe Grey, and now I’m in major love with this girl! *(Sidenote – I seriously love that paint! Did you know you can have it tinted to any color you want at Ace Hardware? Also, this is my personal favorite roller for painting furniture.)
This color grey provides subtle contrast to the light grey walls (sherwin williams shoji white). And I big time dig that this color allows this piece to sort of visually disappear into the background yet it still feels really interesting.
Now the red upholstered bed, a.k.a the red queen, can really shine as God intended! 😉
I’ll show you where the red bookshelf landed in a couple weeks!
Do you like playing musical furniture in your home? You really can’t beat free home decor changes! Am I right?!
