powder bathroom makeover

I’m finally done with the powder bathroom makeover I started a couple of months ago!  You may recall my goal was to take this powder room from builder basic to custom, to bring in a little wow factor and a heavy dose of personality.  To refresh your memory here’s a look at where we started.  This is the picture from the MLS listing of the house and what this bathroom looked like when we toured the house.

It had good bones, everything was in good working order and I was excited to put my own stamp on it.  This windowless bathroom has a small footprint but a really great tall ceiling.  My first thought was to highlight the height of the space in order to make it feel more open and spacious.  To do that I added a floor to ceiling tile wall, using this subway mosaic ceramic tile.  I also painted the walls HGTV Home by Sherwin Williams Aesthetic White, which matched the color of the tile and was just a tad lighter than the trim color.  Visually this allowed the walls to seamlessly blend in with the moulding and doors which really made the whole space feel much larger.  I also painted the ceiling Urbane Bronze by Sherwin Williams, a dark charcoal grey which made the ceiling recede deceiving the eye into thinking the walls are even taller than they actually are.  Last but not least for paint projects, I painted the vanity a fun happy color, HGTV Home by Sherwin Williams Rachel Pink.  It was like the cherry on top of this little makeover and really lightened the mood while upping the personality factor in this little space.  It’s always amazing to me how much paint can do to completely transform a space.

Of course, because I’m a big believer that design is in the details I also switched out the faucet (for this gorgeous one by Kohler) and changed out the cabinet hardware for something a little more sleek and modern with these black cabinet pulls.  The existing light fixture was given a little schoolhouse style makeover.  Then I brought in some art and accessories and called her done!  Enough with the talky-talky, let’s get on with the boat load of after photos!

In lieu of towel bar I opted to bring in a ladder over the commode.  I had plans to make one but this bamboo ladder I found at a local shop, Celadon, was too good of a price to pass up, and all I had to do to make it work in this space was to cut the bottom two rungs off.

It’s probably not normal, but I’m not ashamed to admit I’m slightly obsessed with this t.p. holder.  It’s polished chrome and lucite!  And I love it!

I’m also crazy about the artwork.

All in all this little powder bathroom makes me so happy now!

  • Well done! I adore pink, but it’s tricky to put it in an adult home in a tasteful way. Love it!

  • Oh, I love how it turned out! Why don’t I have any pink in my house?! Adore the prints you selected, especially the Rosa print.

  • I love it! Can you tell me the grout color? If does not appear to be a white-white. This tile gives the look I am going for in my guest bath tub surround. For obvious reasons I don’t want white but I don’t want to go too gray. What you have chosen gives just the right contrast from the tile.

  • Thanks Kitty! SO true! I think it’s all about the right shade of pink and mixing in other more grown up elements to keep it from looking too juvenile or too sweet. I think the black elements and modern clean lines of the faucet and hardware help to balance out the sweetness of the pink vanity.

  • I used a premixed grout in stock at Lowe’s. It’s a little pricier to use a premix but it’s great for projects when you won’t be able to grout it all in one time frame. I was working around my kids schedule and grouting over a couple days when I had the time. This grout comes in a number of different colors – the one I used is bright white which as you can tell isn’t whiter than the tile. White is a tricky color to work with as there a lot of different whites out there and they are all so different. How it looks will depend on the tile that it’s paired with. Hope this helps! – Here’s the direct link to the one I used – http://www.lowes.com/pd_55500-70680-7052022525___?Ntt=tec++premixed+grout+bright+white&UserSearch=tec++premixed+grout+bright+white&productId=50333923#BVRRWidgetID

  • Carmel, this powder room is stunning! It would make me super happy, too! I love that you said “design is in the details”. I couldn’t agree more and you nailed it in here! My favorite feature, though, is the tiled wall. I have a little powder room that needs making over as well and yours certainly gives me inspiration! Thanks for sharing!

  • Celadon is a great store, isn’t it? I love ramble through. Love, love, love the bathroom!

  • Thanks Wendy! Yes the tile wall really did make a big statement in here and really gave the bathroom a custom look- a lot of visual bang for the buck. That subway mosaic is less than $4 a square foot!

  • For some reason the toliet paper link isn’t working &I’m also slightly obsessed, could you share link another way
    Thanks

  • Well worth the wait. .I really enjoyed watching your process on snapchat. But the before and after photos is my fave! So beautiful!
Ps.. You should ck out therealjtf on snapchat. He’s so funny. Plus sometimes you see his house which may sound stalkerish… But I swear I jus like to see the design!

  • Hum,still getting something wrong with the irl it’s a test site correct?

  • No -the link you should take you directly to Etsy. Maybe try refreshing your browser? Not sure why it wouldn’t be working for you?

  • Anybody else having trouble with the etsy site?
I keep getting error message with the irl not being correct. I have asked others to check for me and they get the same message

  • That is so weird. It works for me with no issue. Maybe just go directly to Etsy instead of using the link.

  • Amazing as always! Can you please tell me how you cut the ladder rungs and how you hung the plants (what are they sitting in and how did you attach to the ladder?) Your rooms are such an inspiration and I would love to do something similar with the ladder in our main bathroom. Awesome job!

  • We are traveling to see our new house next week. I’m sure hoping I can use the Urbane charcoal color on a ceiling somewhere! It’s kind of anxious/exciting to see the house we haven’t actually seen empty before…yikes! Really excited to implement some of your inspiration with all the ideas I have been saving, but I love the dark ceiling! We shall see!

  • Thanks so much Shoshana! I used a power saw to cut the rungs. I probably could have used a hand saw but the power saw was much quicker. The plants are sitting in a clear plastic container. I picked it up in the storage section of Lowe’s – it’s meant to be used in a refrigerator or pantry. It was the perfect size for my project. Since the succulents don’t weigh very much I just attached the container holding the plants to the ladder with a heavy duty rope (also from Lowe’s). Hope this helps! Let me know if I can answer any more questions to help you with your project.

  • I LOVE the way this turned out!!! So fun and fresh! I am in LOVE with the print next to the mirror. By chance could you tell me where you found it?

  • Cute bathroom, wandering where u found the black and white striped light covers for above the sink? Thnks for sharing
